Yosef and the Dreams 2

Posted by chanie

The butler returned to his position and the baker was hung... Bereishis 40:22

In their dreams, the butler and the baker were each doing different things. The baker was standing, baskets on his head, while the birds pecked at the bread. The butler was squeezing grapes, and handing the cup to the king.

How did Yosef know who was destined to live and who to die? Yosef knew that the baker would die, because anyone who can stand and let birds peck at bread that was baked for the king is irresponsible and not a proud servant, nor a reliable one. On the other hand, one who takes pains to do his work properly, and then hands it to the king himself, will become a favorite who is pardoned, even if he messes up.

This is how Yosef knew who would live. And this is the way we need to serve Hashem, the King of kings.

A child of his Old Age

Posted by Scholar

This verse is taken from Bereishis 37:3 and speaks about Yaakov and his sons and then mentions that Yosef was born to Yaakov in his old age.

  • On this verse Rashi says the Yosef was born in Yaakovs old age.
  • Targum Onkelos differs and says the meaning of this verse is "he was a wise son", because everything that Yaakov had learned from Shem and Ever(they started the first yeshiva) he gave over to Yosef(unlike the other sons).
  •  A third explanation which is brought down in Bereishis Rabba(Midrash) was because Yosef's appearance resembled Yaakov.
  • Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra says this verse means that Yaakov fathered him at an old age, 91.
The Ramban goes on to argue. All of Yakov's children were born in his old age. Yissacher and Zevulun were no more then a year or two older than Yosef!
The Ramban provides his own opinion to this and adds that he thinks old men used to have a custom to take one of their younger sons to attend to them, he depends on them and never departs from them. That is why he is called son of his old age as he tends to his father at his old age. Yaakov gave this task to Yosef as we can see that Yosef never went with his brothers when the herds went to far off places(as he had to stay with his father)

Yosef and the Dreams

The butler returned to his position and the baker was hung... Bereishis 40:22

What clue in their dreams led Yosef to his interpretation?

Yosef looked carefully at the dreams. In the dream of the butler he saw the butler doing things(holding Pharoahs cup, squeezing grapes...), since one can only perform things when one is alive so to Yosef saw life with the butler.

But with regards to the baker who said "on my head were baskets of bread  and a bird was eating from it." The dream was lacking human activity(such as baking etc or even chasing the bird away). A bird is usually afraid of a person and will not come near food by a person.
Yosef said to the baker that since the bird didn't consider him(the baker) alive so to your dreams indicate that Pharoah will soon end your life.

To Dream a Dream

And he(Yosef) dreamt another dream Genesis 37:9

Yosef's brothers hated him after he told them his first dream so why did he continue to relate the other dream?

The Gemora in Brochas 55B says what we dream at night is what we thought about during the day. Yosef's first dream spoke about how they all worked the field but nevertheless Yosef would be the richest and that the other brothers would bow down to him. They were upset as they thought this was what he was thinking about during the day.
Yosef wanted to prove to his brothers their thoughts were wrong and that his first dream was an act from heaven and not his day time dreaming. His second dream(about his mother bowing down to him) was impossible, just like this was impossible for him to think about during the day so to the first dream was not what he thought about during the day.
After the second dream the brothers realize they were in fact from heaven and this caused them to become jealous.

******************************

Yosef dreams represented both the spiritual and physical world. Thats why Yosef brothers were mad at him, its worst enough to be a master over somebody but to be a master on both worlds - thats really bad
