And he (Yaakov) built himself a house Bereishis(Genesis) 33:17
Yaakov clearly had no desire to settle there permanently so why did he decide to build a house and not to rent a place? The Ramban(1194-1270) answers this with tow possible solutions.
- It is possible to suggest that Yaakov found himself in a place where there was no city and therefore had to build a shelter for himself and a shelter for the animals.
- The Ramban suggests that Yaakov could have built a large house with a fortified tower to protect him from Esav(Esau), should Esav decide to attack.
